The service for hosting IT projects GitHub has published a rating of the most popular programming languages for 2020. The list is compiled based on the number of updates and new repositories in the given language.
Today, more than 56 million developers use GitHub. Since the beginning of 2020, more than 60 million new repositories have appeared – 35% more than in 2019 – the number of updates has reached 1.9 billion.
The most active developers were from North America: 34% of service users live in Canada and the USA – 2% less than a year ago. The number of Asian developers reached 30.7% – 1.1% more than last year.
The average time of merge (merging new and existing code) was 7.5 hours – 18% less than last year’s level. According to analysts, despite the remoteness, teams began to interact more actively and development accelerated.
In addition, GitHub has compiled a ranking of the most popular programming languages with which its users work.
This open-source programming language was created by Japanese scientist Yukihiro Matsumoto in 1995 and has since become one of the most popular. Ruby has been used to build GitHub, Twitter, and Kickstarter.
Shell is a command interpreter for performing actions in operating systems of the UNIX family. Its scripts are used, for example, to automate software updates.

The language was developed by James Gosling in 1990 at Sun Microsystems. The peculiarity of Java is that it is the first object-oriented programming language. Web applications for Twitter, LinkedIn, Amazon and eBay are written in Java. It is also the official language for building Android apps.
Python was developed by Guido Van Rossum in 1991. It contains the YouTube, Quora, Pinterest, and Instagram apps. Python has also been used to create video games, including Civilization IV and Vegas Trike.
